1. Reconciliation of girls with their lovers:
After some time, the two gentlemen join their beloved ladies and explain the reason behind their conduct. Algernon tells Cecily that he pretended to be Ernest for getting a chance to meet her. Jack tells Gwendolen that he invented a younger brother for meeting Gwendolen often in London. These explanations satisfy the ladies. However, the matter of the name "Ernest" remains to be solved. Then, these men reveal the truth that they will get christened with this name on the same afternoon. This act of self-sacrifice removes the only barrier among the lovers, and the two girls fall into the arms of their respective boyfriends.
2. Lady Bracknell's entry:
Now Lady Bracknell appears on the scene. She has come in search of her daughter who had run from home. When Madam Bracknell learns about the two engagements, she accepts one and rejects another. Lady Bracknell approves the relationship between Cecily and Algernon but disapproves of the connection between Jack and Gwendolen. Then, Jack announces that he will not let her ward marry Algernon unless his marriage gets approval. After it, Dr Chasuble appears on the scene and declares that everything is ready for the ceremony of christening. Then, Jack says that there is no need for christenings. When Dr Chasuble mentions Miss Prism, then Madam Bracknell expresses a wish to meet that lady.
3. Happy ending:
When Miss Prism enters, then Lady Bracknell immediately recognizes her as the old nurse or governess of Bracknell house. Miss Prism left that house some twenty-eight years ago with a baby in her hands and never returned. Now, it reveals that Miss Prism put that baby into a leather handbag by mistake and left him in the cloakroom of Victoria railway station due to her absent-mindedness at that time. Jack rushes into his room and brings a leather handbag which Miss Prism identifies as hers. Then, it gets proved that Jack is the elder brother of Algernon or a son of Lady Bracknell's late sister, and his real name is Ernest. So, the two false stories of having a younger brother and having the name "Ernest" turn into realities.
In the end, Lady Bracknell does not object Jack and Gwendolen's marriage; also, Jack has no problem with Cecily and Algernon's marriage. Another pair of Miss Prism and Dr Chasuble becomes evident for the wedding. In this way, the play ends on a happy note with three pairs of lovers who are ready to get married.
